10 Things I've learned about dieting

I’m on a diet.  That should be explanation enough for any weird moods and hallucinations of cheeseburgers.

I find myself Googling every yummy food known to man in order to get a calorie count, only to realize I cannot eat it, because diets only let you eat the caloric equivalent of a piece of unbuttered toast and water.

I’m beginning to think liposuction doesn’t sound so bad after all.

So what if they have to gash a whole in your body, insert a vacuum hose, and suck until they hit bone, it’s gotta be an outpatient procedure nowadays.  Doesn’t it?

The only drawback is I have every bit of confidence that I could replace all that fat within a year.  That, and then there’s the money, and the cutting.  Ya, I should never underestimate someone taking a scalpel to my skin.

So I’m back to being on a diet.  This time it’s for real.  It’s not just a reconnaissance mission to take back my thighs.

I’m taking back my whole chubby self, double chin and all.

I hope there’s an exchange policy on flab.

I’m down twelve pounds.  Doesn’t seem like much, but I did fit comfortably back into a pair of jeans I haven’t worn in quite some time.

The bummer is I’ve decided I hate the jeans.  Go figure!  It’s just my luck.  I’m stuck wearing jeans that are a size too big or jeans I hate.  Now I’m going to have to lose another size so I can justify buying a new pair.  That’s all there is too it.

1.  Calories count, so I count my calories.

 

I just made that up this second, but doesn’t it sound like a slogan from a diet plan? Ok, I’m probably not the only one who ever said that, but still.

2.  I can sit by and watch my family eat goodies and say NO.

 

I will live to have another Oreo cookie.

 

3.  Exercise can be as simple as taking a walk with my family.

 

But I don’t overestimate the amount of calories I burned on my walk.  It was probably like ten.

4.  Food is not my enemy, appetite is my enemy.

 

What I need and want I want are drastically different.

 

5.  Eat high fiber and high protein foods.

 

6.  If I’m hungry, I drink some water and wait a while.

 

If I’m still hungry, I eat something, but I am sure the calories are counted in my overall total for the day.

 

7.  Eat for the right reasons.

 

In my family, we tend to overeat just because something tastes good.  “It tastes so good” is not enough reason to eat more.

 

8.  Fad diets are not for me.

 

I won’t stick to them for more than three days.  I have to eat regular (to me) foods or else I won’t achieve long-term success.

TIP: Find a meal plan that works into your budget, lifestyle, and taste.

9.  No one may notice my accomplishments, but I need to keep going.

 

I trained my children to tell me I look thinner.

TIP:  Make baby step goals.

If I tell myself that I need to lose twenty pounds, I’ll quit before I even start.

So I tell myself five pounds and then another five.  I’m three pounds away from my next goal.

Believe me, I’m no dieting expert.  I’m one of those women who actually enjoys eating, and it’s downright shocking how much food I can consume when I don’t stop myself.

I do not have a fast metabolism and dare I admit this, being a bit overweight doesn’t even bother me that much when I look in the mirror.  I don’t care enough to lose the weight.

What makes me diet from time to time is that I feel bad when I’m overweight.  Carrying around an extra ten, fifteen, or twenty pounds makes a huge difference.  It’s a difference I can feel when I’m sitting down and bending over.

It’s uncomfortable and I hate being uncomfortable in my own skin.

I don’t think weight management is necessarily about a number.

It’s about getting to a place where you feel good.

I suspect when you feel good, you’ll look good too.

So how about you share your accomplishments, or maybe what you’ve learned about dieting?

If you’re one of those girls who can eat a cow without even getting a gas bubble, don’t tell me please.

Jealousy isn’t good for my soul. ;-)

    I don’t think it’s the calories that make a diet difficult. It’s the math. See, I lost 70 pounds before my son’s wedding last year. Only then I realized I had messed up my math and I’d only lost 60. And now I’ve gained back 10 so I’m only down 50. (Aren’t you confused now too?)

    And don’t say that’s still so great because I still have much more to lose. I’ve got to get serious about it again, and I don’t want to wait until another of my children announce their engagement before I get motivated!

    I’ve lost almost 12 pounds too–hoping that I managed the last half-pound this week. But I hate, hate, hate diets. They don’t let you eat anything good. Calorie counting is definitely the way to go. Eat what you want but watch your portions and count the calories. I use MyFitnessPal, and it works for me. And like you, I carry the extra weight all over my small frame. So nice to see the inches disappear!

    I used to be ‘one of those girls’ in fact at one time I was on a high fat diet and was using slim fast as a nutritional suppliment (try explaining that to an 8 year old.)

    Anyway for about the last year or so I’ve been trying to loose about 20lbs. The key for me as well is calorie counting…I wonder what to do now that I’m just trying to maintain…

      To maintain weight, I think you have to figure out how many calories you actually need/use in a day and then keep your eating roughly within those limits so you’re not eating too few calories or too many. I’m certainly not an expert on weight though. Congrats on your weight loss!

    Good for you for losing weight. Burning fat is good for our bodies.I hope you’re able to reach your goal and to find pants that you like. I enjoyed your humorous take on this topic. I’ve lost 30 pounds and agree about the drinking water thing. That really helps. I’ve been losing slowly but it’s coming off, one ounce at a time. Keep up the good work.

      I love chocolate too! At a certain time every month, I would eat tons of chocolate. I’d just have terrible cravings, but I’ve noticed now that I’m eating less and not eating the candy, I don’t even crave. For me, the more I eat it, the more I want it.

      Thank you for the very big Erma-ish compliment. I appreciate your kind words. I do actually need to lose more weight. Probably another 12 pounds. Then I’ll be at a weight where I’m completely comfortable and healthy. I tend to gain weight all over, so I carry a lot of extra, more than most people think. No fears with me, I like eating too much to get too thin. ;-)

      Sorry for the reminder. The extra weight does do some wear and tear on the body. It’s surprising how little weight it sometimes takes to slow you down. Best wishes. Hope those knees feel better.

    I’m here with you. At my age it’s more about being healthy than anything else, and OK, I’d be lying if I didn’t say I got a thrill when I stepped on the scales and they showed my lowest weight in 7 years. I still have more to go, but I’m on the right road. It’s not just been a “diet”, but a drastic life makeover. I ate low fat for years and it didn’t work. I had to go low carb too. details are on my Bible Study blog…I’m giving God the credit for heading me in this direction. nothing you can eat tastes as good as being happy in your own skin!

    Good post and oh so true. I’ve lost 16, but I’ve been stuck here for awhile because I keep playing around and not being serious about my diet. Time to get back to it!

    My downfall is sweets. I need to remind myself that a couple squares of dark chocolate is fine. I big slice of cake after every meal is not. But oh, that cake tastes good. :)

    Sometimes if I’m feeling particularly munchy, I’ll make a cup of tea. I used to hate tea but am trying to drink it more because it’s good for you and because I need to drink less diet soda (I don’t like coffee). But it does fill the belly, and some of the flavors are pretty good.

    Amen sister! I really believe it’s mind over matter. If you really want to do it, you can. Just takes a little(or a lot) self control. Keep going, you’re doing great! :) :)
