31 Days of Living by Faith, Day 1 – Introduction

Welcome to 31 Days of Living by Faith.  I am glad you are here.  Now, don’t flip out over the title and run away.  Whether you have no faith, little faith, or great faith, this month is for you.

Sometimes we hear about God performing miracles and we clap our hands and say “Yay God!”, but we do not think He will give us a miracle.  We read the stories in the Bible and see men and women of old leading lives full of faith and we dismiss it as ancient history, not applicable for today.

But this month, you are going to see God work in the lives of your bloggy neighbors.  After 31 Days, you won’t just be saying “Yay God” for someone elses miracle, but you will be begging God for a miracle of your own.

Now you know I can’t write meaningful posts for thirty-one straight days, so I have enlisted some help from a handful of the most amazing women I know.  If you read this month, you will be blessed.  I think I can go out on a limb and promise you that.

Assuming we’ll have lots of extra visitors to The Domestic Fringe, each day I will be adding a photo and a short biography to go along with the posts.  I want you to not only read the stories of faith from these women, but I want you to see that they are regular ordinary people.  We do not think we have arrived.  We do not know everything.  We simply attempt to believe God.

Sometimes we think people of faith are somehow different from us, but everyone who will be writing this month is a regular woman leading a crazy life with wonky moments of pain, suffering, joy, and love.  Just. Like. You.

These next 31 Days will be an adventure.  I imagine you’ll leave in tears one day and be laughing the next.  No two stories will be the same, but they will all be united by the common thread of faith.

Will you join us?

I am praying you will.  It is my goal that after these 31 Days of Faith, you will step into November encouraged, with your faith strengthened.

Invite your friends, pass the word along, and help make October a life-changing month.

Tricia is a wife, mother, and wanna-be writer.  She authors The Domestic Fringe.  She also tries really hard not to burn the house down every time she cooks.  Some days go better than others, but no matter what, she knows God loves her and cares for her.  She sincerely hopes this will be a good month, a month to praise God for what He has done and what He is going to do.  She wants you to know that she’s honored you are taking the time to read, and she wants you to feel free to leave comments.

Looking Back, Looking Ahead

Monday is coming fast.  Are you ready?  I’m not sure I am.  I’ve never had butterflies in my stomach over my blog before.  Now it’s like all the butterflies in the world landed in my stomach.  My daughter says in the winter they go to Texas, but I disagree.  They come to me.

We’re going to hear from some really fabulous guests over this next month.  It won’t just be me doing the talking, but I must admit, I will be doing most of the talking.  We will hear from an author…maybe you’ve read one of her books, a missionary, a pastor’s wife, a young women just beginning to make her mark on the world, and even FringeMan.  He’ll be sharing his story in a vlog.  Every day will be different.

It’s not always easy to say what needs to be said, but we’re doing our best and we’re going to allow God to do the rest.

I sure hope you’ll join us for 31 Days of Living by Faith.

Join me over here:

I’m going to feel a little disconnected this month.  I mean, I will be posting every single day for 31 days, but it will be different, not my usual nonsense.  That’s why I’ll sharing all the normal, crazy life stuff over on The Domestic Fringe’s facebook page.  I hope you’ll join me over there.

Just click LIKE.

This week I enjoyed:

I also appreciate everyone who shared The Skinny on The Jean.  Blows me away!  I think it’s up to 63 facebook shares and that is just plain crazy.  I never would have thought so many have such strong feeling towards The Skinny Jean.

So excited about this:

Some Make it Beautiful: DIY

SOME PEOPLE LOOK FOR A BEAUTIFUL PLACE

OTHERS MAKE A PLACE BEAUTIFUL

Isn’t that so true?

Now, granted, some of us do a better job making our places beautiful than others.  Beauty is in the eye (and pocketbook) of the beholder.  I do not do nearly as good a job as most people, but I am working on it, one mediocre project at a time.  And that’s ok.  I am good with it.

Pinterest is a pretty fabulous place.  Not only can we look at the best of the beautiful and be inspired, but we can take that inspiration and add a little beautiful to our own corner of the world.

I ran across THIS PROJECT on Pinterest and new I had to make it.

wooden hand painted sunrise sign with wordsMy sign is on a slightly different scale than the original.  The original used 1x12x8 boards and I used 1x10x6 boards.  That was purely an economic choice.  Wood is expensive in New York.  I don’t know how it’s priced where you live, but I wasn’t really willing to pay more than $10 a board.

I already had the paint.  I used cheap acrylic paint that I keep on hand for my children and I mixed my own colors.  There are a lot better paints to be had, but I tried to complete this project by buying as little as possible.

If you want all the details on how to make this sign, go to the original artist.  He recounts the process in great detail.  I am only giving a summary.

First I aged the wood boards by beating them to death.  Think chains, a screwdriver, and a hammer.  Then I rubbed them down with steel wool and apple cider vinegar.

It made the house smell so bad, I had to put a fan in the window and FringeMan moved the wood outside to dry overnight.

Then we screwed the boards together by attaching metal plates to the back of the boards.

Then I began painting.

DIY wooden sign

I taped off what I wanted to be the outline of the sun and rays with painter’s tape.  I used a large plate/platter to make the outline of the sun and a ruler to make the rays.

wooden painting with acrylic paint sunriseThis is the sunrise without the red outline.  None of it very precise.  I painted on color with a cheap foam brush.

outlining a sunrise on wood with red paint

After you have the entire board painted, let it dry.  Then sand it with fine sandpaper and brush on watered down white paint.  As soon as you brush on the paint, wipe it off with a paper towel or an old rag.  This will give it a sun-aged look.

After that is dry (it won’t take long), water down brown paint and repeat the process.  I used the paint.  The original instructions used paint, but I think a brown stain would work better.  I haven’t tried it, so I can’t say for sure, but I have used stain on other projects and I think it is better for giving wood an aged look.

Then it is time for the lettering, the hardest part.

lettering on old wooden sign

I printed my letter out on paper and then traced them by pressing a ball point pen over the outline.  If you press hard enough, a slight indent will be left on the wood and you can take a pencil and trace over the indent.

Then you paint it with white paint.  I used two coats of white paint and lightly sanded in-between.

text on wood sign

If you wanted this sign to hang outside, you would use different paint.  Acrylic is water-based, so it will wash away.

I wanted to clear coat mine, but I bought a very expensive clear coat and it nearly ruined my sign.  I hated it, so I don’t have a solid clear coat yet.  I don’t really need one, because my sign hangs inside, but I wanted to preserve it somehow.

living room decorIt was my kid’s idea to hang it in the living room.  I had a giant blank wall, so it worked well.  We hung it with picture hooks and metal wire rated for 100 pounds.  The sign isn’t that heavy, but it’s better to be on the safe side, especially with kids in the house.

I’m really happy with the finished product.  I had my doubts along the way, but it came out nice.  I just wish I could have used a bigger font for the world “beautiful”, but since my boards were shorter and narrower, this was the best I could do.

Pinterest Party DIY

Now I get to tell you about something exciting.

I am hosting a Pinterest Party on November 1st.

You have one month to find a project, recipe, outfit, home decor style, whatever!  Then I want you to recreate it, take pictures, and post it to your blog.

What good is looking at pretty pictures if they don’t inspire us to do something?

Now is your chance to do something.

If you like to cook, find a recipe.  If you’re into fashion, find an outfit for inspiration.  If you’re a DIY junkie, do something.  If you like to change things up in your home, find a home that motivates you to do something different.  It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you do it, take pictures, and post the results to your blog.

I’ll have a linky set up first thing on November 1st and we’ll have ourselves a party.

So help me spread the word.  Grab that Pinterest Parry sign I made and post it all over blogland, facebook, and twitter.  Post it on your street corner if you want, just help me invite people to the party.

Cause, you know you want to come.

Are you in?

P.S.  Linking today’s post to Creative Juice Thursday at Momnivor’s Dilemma.  Go visit for other creative projects.

Celebrated With A Romantic Deer

15th, crystal anniversary

Last Thursday was our “crystal” anniversary – 15 years.  It’s a huge milestone and I am sure you are all tired of hearing about it, but I cannot let it go just yet.  I told you FringeMan wanted to celebrate 15 years with tall, cold glasses of Crystal Light, but I wanted more, something to commemorate this special day.

I went in search of the perfect FringeMan gift.  It couldn’t just be a new screwdriver (unless it had our anniversary or my face etched in the handle) or box of ammunition (always an appropriate gift for my mister).  I wanted special.

That’s when I searched Etsy.  I know it’s not a typical male gift shop, but hey, desperate times call for handmade.  After what only seemed like minutes of clicking (I am sure it was hours though), I stumbled on The Rustic Roost and spied a customized painting on burlap that had FringeMan’s name all over it.

If you knew FringeMan, you would know this is perfect.  After all, this was one of our wedding photos.

Megan from The Rustic Roost was so sweet and wonderful to work with.  She made up FringeMan’s painting and sent it right away, so that it arrived the day before our anniversary.  I can’t thank her enough.

We got a sitter for the kids and planned a nice dinner out, but I had a bit of a meltdown getting dressed.  It was a classic “I have nothing to wear!” moment.  Except, I really didn’t have anything to wear.  Well, nothing I wanted to wear.  You know how that goes.

I settled on a dress I love, but is really a little large for me now, so I altered it.  When I came downstairs I told FringeMan, “Take me anywhere, but do not make me walk through a metal detector!”

I had this dress held together with 13 safety pins.  13!

It kind of brought me back to my high-school days when hemming my uniform skirt with staples was a cool thing to do.

I asked my son to take a picture for What I Wore Wednesday and this is what I get.

anniversary dress and motorcycle boots

I don’t even have a head!

Maybe I should have safety pinned it on.

Because we have been married for fifteen years and FringeMan knows me well, he decided to let me pick out my own gift.  We generally don’t do gifts, but 15 years is 15 years!  A gift I was getting.

At first I tried to be traditional.  I printed out my 20% off Kohl’s coupon and I was going to get a watch.  That’s the traditional 15 year gift, but I didn’t really want a watch.  I could use one, because I do not have one, but…

Then I thought I should get a sewing machine.  I was wearing 13 safety pins after all, but FringeMan said that would equate to him buying me a toaster, so we scrapped that idea.  We weren’t going through any metal detectors anyway.

Then FringeMan said a few words that set me free.

“You’re not traditional or sentimental, so get whatever you want.”

“Take me right to Target, Baby!”

And he did.  That’s where I got yesterday’s outfit and I don’t regret it one bit.

So what do you do for your milestone anniversaries?

Are you sentimental?  Traditional?

Or are you like me…buy a romantic deer head and call it day.

  * The dress with the 13 safety pins is Target too, but it is older.

Trending: Oxblood

I feel I must redeem myself after my last fashion post  – The Skinny on The Jean.   It is my most-shared post to date.  Part of me thinks – Fabulous!  The sane part of me thinks –  Everyone  and their neighbor was laughing at me and my not-so-skinny bottom half.

Maybe you were just identifying with my fashion struggles.  Ya, that must be it. 😉

I did get a recommendation from a trustworthy source who said I must try Old Navy’s skinny jeans, because Target’s are horrible for anyone with flesh on their bones.  That’s just the word on the Fringe, not gospel, but my ordeal was with Target’s skinny jeans, sooooo….

Target,

I love you more than cheesecake, but I hate your skinny jeans.

Forever,

A Curvy Faithful Shopper

I am saying all this to say, I am keeping an open mind, but I refuse to wear pants that give me blood clots, even if they pair well with flowy tops.

By this point in the post, you all realize I have no fashion insights to bequeath to you my loyal readers; however, I did hear Oxblood is the color of fall.
Apparently it is not to be confused with dark red, plum, eggplant, burgundy, or heaven forbid, maroon.

I go by the box of Crayola Crayons and they do not have Oxblood.  I checked.  This leaves me in a fall style quandary, because what if I pick up a sweater that is more Bison blood than Oxblood?  Or, I shutter to think it, ordinary cow blood??  I live in dairy country after all.

Despite my lack of crayons, I feel confident with this color called Oxblood.  You see I wore a uniform for my entire childhood and wouldn’t you know, the plaid’s main color was Oxblood, only I didn’t go to a fashionable school, so they called it maroon.

Yes, it was a horror.

I banned the color, with any slight variations, from my wardrobe for the last few years. (You know I am lying when I say “few” years, right?  Because high-school is a distant memory.) I’ve had a change of heart though, and Target helped.

See Target, I still love you.

I present to you “Oxblood” in the form of a legging.  I can only tolerate small doses of the high-school crayonless color.

Entire fall outfit from Target dress and sweater and leggings

Please excuse the inordinate amount of photos of myself.  FringeMan was playing photographer and I was the model.  He posed me.

Do not make me explain how weird that was.

Did I mention we were in a cemetery.

Yup.  Weird. Weird. Weird.

Collage of Target Dress, Oxblood Leggings, Boots

My Daughter and I in a Photo Shoot

Then my non-Oxblood wearing daughter joined the fun.
She lets her inner super-model out at even the mention of a camera.

I quite possibly have never felt dorkier than I did posing for these pictures, which may explain why my foot is so dang high on that wall.

Either way, it was a gorgeous day and we had fun.  Thank you FringeMan.  I sure hope Vogue doesn’t snatch you away, because you’re the best photographer I have.  At least you are my height.  FringeKid always gets shots of the inside of my nose…she’s just a little too short to get a good head-on photograph.

I am linking up to Pretty Shiny Sparkly’s Bloggers Do It Better.  By “It” she means wearing Oxblood today.  Just in case you wondered.
And Wednesday I will be linking to The Pleated Poppy’s What I Wore Wednesday, only I wore this on Sunday.  And…Fashion Friday with Musings of a Housewife.

So, tell me.  What do you think of Oxblood?  Do you think spring’s hot color will be Chicken Blood?  I, for one, hope not.

Hello Monday, Hello Fall

American Flag in cemetary with Cross

Hello Monday.

Are you sure you only have 24 hours, because my to-do list is really, really long today.  I want to do it all, but we’ll see.  I would settle for a almost all.

Hello Early Fall.

I love you.  Mostly because I love boots and I can wear my boots every single day if I want.  I also love pumpkins and hot drinks and pumpkin pie spice coffee creamer.

Some days I want you to stay forever, but I know I will love you less and less as the days pass.  It’s not you really, it’s the season you usher in.  If it were just you, I would most certainly love you forever.

Vintage Owl on Etsy

Hello Little Owl.

Are you as in love with owls as I am?

I just cannot help myself.  I am happy to report that this little vintage mama owl hugging her babies is now available in The Fringe Shop.

A matching sugar & creamer set is also available.  They are so cute I want to keep them, but alas, I need their adorableness for my shop.

Hello 31 Days of Living by Faith.

blog button 31 Days of Living by FaithOh, my word!  I am freaking out a little.  Who came up with the idea of writing 31 Days of Living by Faith anyway?

Laura.  That is who.

It’s OK Laura.  I needed the push, so thank you.  I mean it.

As for writing it and living it, I am doing my best friends.  You’ll forgive me for the rest, won’t you?

Money Shot Monday – Made for Walking

Women's Motorcycle Boots Dr. Martens

These Boots Are Made for Walkin’.

That’s the song made famous by Nancy Sinatra in 1966, but these are my boots today.  They are definitely made for walking and they take me everywhere I want to go.

I am participating with one of my most favorite bloggers, Flower Patch Farmgirl.  She is hosting her first (ever) link-up and it is called Money Shot Monday.  The thing is she always writes such heart-felt posts that cut to the very core of who I am, and I write stuff.  I really don’t know how to approach this post, but I took this picture of my boots, because I love them and I think they look cool on my no-so-cool floor.  So that’s that.

But then I remember the dream I had last night…

I was working (teaching) in a college, and I remember walking up this steep hill with a book and folder in my arms.  I was wearing a pencil skirt and very high leopard heels.  Now you know this was a dream…pencil skirt AND heels climbing a hill?  Come on now.  At least I looked good in my dream though.  Anyway, in this dream, I helped murder someone.  Not with my own hands, but I was a participant in word, advice.

Let me tell you, I woke up feeling guilty.  I mean, come on!  A well-dressed accomplice to murder…What in the world???

So, after waking up with guilt, I went downstairs to start the coffee.  You know, after a dream like that, you need coffee.

I’m scooping coffee grounds and my son comes out and says he had a dream, and he begins telling the tale.  He always retells a story with every single little detail and sometimes my mind wanders.  I don’t like that, but it does.  Sometimes.  Before coffee, especially.

When he gets to the part of the dream with me in it, he comes over and puts his hand on my arm.  Then he says, “Mom, we had a huge old tent set up in the field and you fell right on it and broke it.”

That made me feel a lot better, and dare I say, some of the murderous guilt left, because that sounds like me.  I am not a murderer, but I am definitely a klutz.

I may not have a pencil skirt or leopard print heels, but I have boots.  They were made for walkin’ and they take me up plenty of hills, no guilt involved.

That’s it, my Money Shot Monday.  Make of it what you will.
