I should probably state that I know nothing about gardening, but I’m inspired by the idea of growing a garden. Fruits and vegetables are ridiculously expensive in the supermarket, and besides, why am I growing grass that needs to be moved when I could be growing food that needs to be eaten.
We hardly have a lawn, back or front. We live on an extremely small lot in town. I’m pretty sure the area rung in my living room is larger than my front lawn, and our backyard isn’t much bigger. My hope is to simply build a patio out back. That should fill all of the useable space.
Despite the small nature of our yard, my husband and I have been discussing ways we can better use and manage what we have. In stead of whining about our little yard, we’re going to work it, making it work for us in return.
Next summer our front yard will become an herb garden. Since I’ve made that declaration, people started offering me plants for next spring. I’m pretty sure after next summer, I’ll never buy herbs again. We shall eat flavorful meals from this time forward and grow treats for Charlotte the rabbit.
At least, that’s the plan.
Gardens can save big money!

I am an avid gardener, and I must warn you that it can take quite a bit of money to get one started. We do a mix between square foot gardening and vertical row gardening. This will be my third year doing a garden in our current house, and I think it will be the first year that I won’t have to spend tons of money on things like soil enhancers and plants. The main reason for that is because I have left overs from last year, and I have been making my own compost. It takes time and money to get an amazing garden, so if you are tight on money, start small. Learn how to grow lettuce all year round. You’ll never have to buy a salad again, and the seeds are super cheap. Think about the kind of produce you want to replace, and then think about if that’s logical in your situation. Small plants, like lettuce and swish chard, are cheap and easy. Large plants, like tomatoes, cucumbers, and zucchini, can be expensive, require space, and attention.
Oh these pictures got me really excited! How cool! Looking back on my childhood, gardening is one of the things I miss most. We use to make money selling our wares. We sold melons, corn on the cob, and strawberries, raspberries, but mostly melons. They really were easy and we did well with them. My mom knew what she was doing.
I like the idea of gardening more than the act itself. Honestly, I get bored with the whole process. I decided in mid-September that I was done with my 3 tomato plants and have let them wither. And, I’m terrible at watering. But, I so believe in the philosophy of locally grown and sourced food. I guess my will is just weak.
I live in a townhouse and have a very small yard that I can plant in. This summer I tried vegetables for the first time and fell in love! I did cucumbers, tomatoes, brocolli, green peppers and green beans. There is something really amazing about eating food you have grown!
Next summer I plan on making my whole yard (all 10 x15 feet of it!!) a garden. All I grow is weeds anyway so I’m really excited for it!
I think now is the time to get your garlic in… Not ready? Neither am I !!!
My mother lives on a large lot and pretty much never buys a veg at the store, only some fruits. I have a townhouse with a tiny lot but have a lot of container plant, tomatoes and peppers and eggplants will do great and so low maintenance (because I kill plants) also had a tiny plot of corn this year and we got several ears, so you can go a long way with your garden! The more you plant the less you mow! :o)
I did square foot gardening this summer and it did great. We had a chilly spring so some of my seeds never sprouted. We had a ton of cucumbers and cherry tomatoes. I can’t wait for next summer to tweak my garden.
