I grew up in a generation filled with superheros.  Good fought evil and good always won.

Superman, the Man of Steel, was among my favorite heroes of the day.  I watched the Superman movies over and over again.  Of course, Superman II, the movie where he fell in love, was my favorite.

Superheroes are more than entertainment, they are hope in a world wrought with evil, suffering, and pain.  They are symbols of help to the helpless and icons of strength to those who wanted to change the world.

They are everything that is right and good in life.  They sacrifice their good for the sake of others, put the needs of others ahead of their own, they stand up to evil.

I can’t help but think our children would benefit from a little more superhero action.

That’s why I am excited about the new Man of Steel movie coming out on June 14th, and if you buy your tickets at Walmart, you can see the movie before it debuts nationwide.  Walmart is also gifting an exclusive free digital comic book, written by S. Goyer, author of Man of Steel, when you purchase your ticket.  It’s win-win!

This is first offer of its kind, so be sure to take full advantage of it.

It’s also a great idea for Father’s Day.

My thirteen year old first became enamored with Superman when he was about three.  At the time, we often traveled through Atlanta.  Every time we started getting close to the tall buildings, my son would begin talking about Superman.  He was sure the ‘real’ Superman lived in Atlanta.

Child in a Superman costume

I look at this picture and wonder what in the world happened to my cute baby.  Now he’s old enough to take on a mommy/son date to see Man of Steel.

He wore this costume everywhere.  He’d sit in the grocery cart with his little feet dangling out the front and that big puffy chest pushed up into his chin, and each time someone stopped him and exclaimed over the little ‘Superman’, it made it him feel more and more super.  His little chest stuck out two feet.

He would tell us to go ahead and punch him in the chest.  He could take it.  He was Superman, after all.

Then he’d run across the room and take a flying leap into our big, puffy blue chair.  He really did fly.  He wouldn’t stop until we promised we saw him fly.  For real.

Now my little cape wearer is thirteen and he has grown up to be super in so many ways.
