Remember how I once mentioned the fact that average women spend $100 a month on beauty products?
Well, I’m not one of those women. I’m pretty minimalistic when it comes to skincare and my makeup lasts forever. I’m sure it’s a petrie dish of bacteria, because I have some makeup that’s 7+ years old. I know, I know, trash the garbage already. I get that. It’s just like watching an old blush go into the trash is like watching money getting flushed. Not my favorite thing to do.
Despite my lazy girl’s attitude toward all things cosmetic, I went on a birthday spending binge last month and bought some new makeup. I figured it was about time. Besides, I don’t like the thought of contracting flesh-eating disease via an old mascara.
Know what I’m saying?
I went into Ulta and the nice girls help me. I figure they know waaaay more about makeup than I do.
I asked for an eyeliner that doesn’t smudge, because I’ve had serious smudge problems my whole life. Eyeliner just doesn’t stay on my eyes. It runs down my cheeks, smudges across my lids, and streaks across my temples.
The woman who helped me said she had tried every eyeliner in the store and only two didn’t smudge. I forgot what the other brand was, but I bought this Marc Jacobs eyeliner and I’m not sorry.
Seems I found the holy grail of eyeliners.
It doesn’t smudge!
I really didn’t think it would live up to my expectations, but it did.
Marc Jacobs eyeliner is most definitely the way to go.
They had a few colors, but I only bought the black. It’s pretty soft and creamy and slides on easily; however, I use a small brush to put it on. I’m better with a brush…straighter lines and all that.
Then I went ahead and bought a new foundation. In the summer, I like wearing BB cream only, but I wanted something with slightly more coverage for winter.
Here’s the thing: I hate feeling or looking like I’m wearing foundation. Plus, I have super dry skin – snakeskin, but not in a good, cool handbag sort of way.
The nice Ulta girl told me I would like Laura Mercier Moisture Supreme foundation. Two for two. I love it.
It’s hydrating and doesn’t look or feel like foundation.
Last, but not least, I got a few new eye-shadows from Mica Bella Cosmetics. These are really pretty. They are sparkly pigments that go on smooth and last all day.
You can also add water and use these pigments as eyeliner and you can mix it with lip balm and turn the pigments into lipstick. They are all natural, so no chemical worries when using these as lipstick. I got them from a kiosk in the Atlanta area.
That’s the end of my birthday shopping spree, but I found some fabulous products that I’m sure I will keep far beyond their expiration date.

What new skincare/cosmetic products have you used and loved? Please share in the comments.
I have super oily skin, including my eyelids (I know, gross, right?!), so I definitely need a smudge proof eyeliner. After much searching and trial and error, I found one that I love: Urban Decay liquid liner. Stays put all day, and is surprisingly easy to apply for a liquid liner. I’ve had bad luck with products I love being discontinued though, so I appreciate having a back-up. I will definitely check out your recommendations!
I have difficulty choosing foundation etc the main challenge being that over 65 ish I don’t want to look like an old lady with makeup on. I am very interested in your eyeliner and will check it out. When I ask for help in the store they always seem to show me anything that starts over $75 ..yikes. Good for you on treating yourself for your birthday!
